Reinhold Friebertshauser

Woodworker

Reinhold (Reini) Friebertshauser retired from 30 years of teaching at an independent boys’ school in Cleveland, Ohio.  His classes covered many subjects from philosophy and logic, to German language, CAD, mechanical drawing and more.  During the last decade of his teaching career, he served as chair of the visual and performing arts department at the school.

Reini has been a summer resident of the Les Cheneaux Islands in Michigan’s Upper Penninsula for the past 35 years and hand built his house and docks on Coryell Island.  His wife Ann and him share their time between the UP and Chagrin Falls, Ohio.  These days, Reini spends a great deal of his time at the lathe.  He has exhibited his work in juried shows at the Valley Art Center, Gates Mills Annual Art Show, and the 9th Annual May Show at Lakeland College.

Of his work, he says the following:

“I’ve spent most of my adult life teaching and coaching teenagers and now have more time to devote to my own work. This work reflects the wide variety of styles and methods which I’ve explored with my students. Ranging from functional to display pieces, I aim to synthesize the two. I especially enjoy working at the lathe that I keep on my deck overlooking Lake Huron. Some of my recent works are the lamps and necklaces made of wood and natural found objects. Above all, I enjoy sharing my love of this craft with other people.”
