After watching Dean draw during elementary school, his teacher encouraged him to attend classes at The Cleveland Museum of Art. That was the beginning of his art career. Dean’s professional life as a commercial artist spanned forty-five years as an illustrator and retoucher. He was a master of the air-brush with his work appearing in Time Magazine, US News & World Report, Fortune Magazine, and many others. Since his retirement, Dean has devoted his art to transparent watercolors. The fact that he loves the challenge and finds it exciting shows in his work.
After working and raising a family, I felt the time was right to re-explore a well-developed interest in the three-dimensional art forms that my instructor, Toshiko Takaezu, helped me to understand. As I began to work, memories of art school began to resurface, and the words of my instructor formed the contours of my work: “Create what you know best.” Thinking in this way, I remember my cherished pet turtle (I was not allowed a dog) and the quality years we spent together. I’ve discovered I have many turtles stored inside of me – all representing what this pet embodied: happiness, beauty, gentleness, and goodness. These are my thoughts, recalling and sharing, as I create in my turtle’s image. More recently I create dog sculptures, never knowing who will emerge, as I pay tribute to these wonderful creatures that bring joy, peace, help, and understanding of so many humans. -Sharon G.
